I was diagnosed with asthma when I was 76. We had a 3-week trip planned to the southeast states and I was prepared. I had my meds and portable nebulizer so the trip started out fine until we got farther south. We stayed at higher end hotels, but the farther east and south we went we noticed mold in the bathrooms. We even changed rooms once because of the smell and it was way worse. I had been feeling fine, but tired, until we ended up at a friend's house. She had a natural habitat yard that looked really nice. But, after spending the day away from her house, we got back to her place and when I got out of the car, I had a big asthma attack. I told my husband I needed to leave and we left immediately. Her yard look great, but probably had a lot of mold and other unknowns. Long story short, I ended up with pneumonia. My husband wanted to take me to the ER or Urgent Care, but being out of state and so far from home, I didn't want to take the time. Besides, I felt awful, so we headed for our 3-day drive home and more moldy hotel rooms. Luckily, she was the last place we wanted to stop so we left the area right away. I went to the doctor when we got home and it had turned into pneumonia. I know now I should have taken the time to find an Urgent Care, but when you don't feel good, you don't make good decisions. I didn't want to be a burden. I hadn't yet gotten used to my asthma and was still learning what worked and what didn't. Now even though I know what sets me off, I'm a little hesitant to travel again. I will eventually, but with a lot more awareness!
