Staying Healthy Will Keep My Asthma Away

I have worked out that if I stay healthy that is my best chance of fighting my asthma. My immune system is not exactly the strongest so I try to strengthen my immunity by doing a number of things. Most people with asthma will agree, if we fall ill to a cold or flu, our asthma becomes worse. It's all connected. Which is probably why we are entitled to free flu shots in the UK.

Unfortunately I cannot control the weather

The weather in the UK is all over the place at the moment. That's April for you, right there!! The temperature has plummeted as low as 39 degrees fahrenheit and as a result of this my asthma came on. I think my body was trying to fight something because my throat felt sore and I was in the beginnings of a cold. My peak flow dropped a tad so I made the executive decision to take my preventative and that seemed to sort me out.

There's no control over the weather, so at times we all are at the hands of the gods. Someone might shout, "yeah you can!! Just stay indoors!" - well, that's not really helpful or practical in my life.

How I stay healthy to avoid asthma flares

There are plenty of things I can do well to stay healthy and they really do work for me:

Eat clean

95% of my diet is now plant based. I make sure to eat foods that I know will give me the nutrients and vitamins to build a stronger immunity. This will help to fight off colds and viruses or lessen the impact should I get them.

Exercise

I make sure to do some form of exercise every single day. I struggle with cardio (for obvious reasons) but tonal exercises and general movement is a must! I only do about 30 minutes a day but it really is beneficial in helping with anxiety and keeping my body feeling nice and tight.

Live in a clean and minimalistic space

Living in a clean and clear space is crucial. My asthma is more likely to thrive in a cluttered un-vacuumed carpeted environment than if I have less soft furnishings and well ventilated place.

Drink plenty of fluids

Coffee, water, herbal teas are essential if I want to keep well-hydrated and feel good. I don't have any milk or sugars in any of my drinks and this has had a positive response on my body. It's helped heaps with my skin for one thing!

Keep my mind busy with hobbies

This is a very overlooked thing in people's lives. I'm not sure I could function in life without music. I write and play songs. I've been in bands and played at live venues. Hobbies are incredibly important. I would absolutely recommend people seeking out their passions!

Staying connected with family and friends

Again, this is very important for me. There's absolutely nothing wrong with time for myself, however, having a good network of friends and family really can be helpful in terms of my mental health. They can also annoy me, but you can't have one without the other.
