How is asthma defined as controlled?

I think I remember reading somewhere that asthma is defined as controlled if you are able to make it 8 weeks without going to the doctor or missing work or school. I haven't been able to do that in four years lol...

  1. Hi Shaye and thanks for your post/concern - it's a good one! If you speak to various clinicians, each may have a different view on whether one's asthma is 'controlled'. Even from patient to patient, what may seem 'controlled' to one person, may not appear to be 'controlled' to another. The Mayo Clinic speaks of control as: symptoms (coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath) occur 2 days a week or fewer; nighttime awakenings occur 2 times a month or fewer; no interference with daily activities; using one's rescue inhaler 2 days a week or less. Clearly - there is much room for interpretation and individualization here! I can join you in your 'laugh' as you haven't come close to any of this for four years!!!
