Has anyone benefitted from seeing a nutritionist or dietitian?

Has anyone visited a nutritionist or dietitian and found any benefit to managing their severe asthma? I am tempted to visit one, but I have a severe food allergy and skin allergies too, and I am very unsure if it is worth going to meet with one or if I’m actually remedy hunting and it will be a disappointment.

  1. Hi Weezer, and thanks for posting your question. I'm hopeful you will hear from others in the community who may be able to share their experiences with nutritionists and/or dietitians.
I would suggest you find a local practitioner, and ask ahead of time (before your first appointment), if your concerns are issues they address in their practice. That way you can actually 'screen' them to help determine if it's worth your while to go.
    What do you think?

    1. Are you meaning to try to find a nutritionist that specializes in a diet for asthmatics? I've never heard of this please elaborate. Thank you

      1. Hi ! You have asked a great question. As Melissa has mentioned, there is no specific diet for asthma. However, if you do have asthma, certain foods may cause asthma flare-ups, inflammation, and even asthma attacks. Some of these foods, compounds, and ingredients include histamines (https://asthma.net/living/histamines-health-foods), food chemicals (https://asthma.net/living/food-chemicals-trigger), and even spicy foods and spices. Other people might have specific food allergies (to nuts, dairy, wheat, etc.) and this can negatively affect one's asthma. A nutritionist or dietician can be helpful in identifying these things. -Ashlen, Asthma.net community moderator

    2. Yes it's really amazing how much asthma is tied to your diet and how well your gut health is doing! I think it's a bigger Factor than anything else for me well except for Wildfire smoke of course and mold and dust LOL I do know I can tolerate the fire and other irritants better if my stomach is doing well. Very good point I will speak with my dietitian about this as well! Thank you!
