My Asthma Symptoms

  • By grasshopper1944

On Facebook, I was reading about people who were allergic to perfume….I thought I was alone in that category. Apparently, there are many who have that problem.

I not only am allergic to perfumes, cleaners, candles, air fresheners, laundry detergent, anything that smells, mold, mildew, dust, grass, dogs, cats, especially cigarette smoke and bonfire smoke but also have exercise and cold air induced asthma. It sounds like I can do almost nothing but since I began taking Singulair about 10 or 15 years ago…almost all my symptoms have disappeared. It also helped with my hay fever and sinus allergies and I have not had a cold in the last 10-15 years……it has been a God send for me! BTW, I am 72 yrs old.

Unfortunately, all of the lung infections and colds and all that went with my serious asthma for 50 some years have pretty much ruined my lungs as I have COPD. But I am in Pulmonary Rehab right now trying to strengthen my lungs and body. I still have a full life and do what fun things that I can.

Hi grasshopper1944 and thanks for sharing your story with our online community. You’ve had quite an experience with asthma and now COPD.
In view of your concerns with perfumes and other triggers, I thought you might find it helpful to look over this material on that very subject: https://asthma.net/triggers/

As well, since you mentioned that you also have COPD, you may be interested in our sister site which is all about all things COPD. You can register for it here: COPD.net/register
We look forward to your continued input here in our community. You are always welcome here.
    All the best,

It’s wonderful to hear that Singulair helps with all these issues. I have avoided perfumes, and all other scented products for years. 20 years after being diagnosed with asthma, but no longer needing treatment, my cardiologist reminded me I have chronic asthma. I have ignored the issue for the most part as I was not wheezing but have now been prescribed three medications in hopes of also helping regulate my heart. It would be such a joy to actually wear perfume again! Thank you for your post.
