Airbnb Disaster

After two full days and three nights in a hundred-year-old Airbnb townhouse, I am so thankful we check out in 4 hours. My daughter-in-law is already clarified that there was an asthmatic guest and made sure there was no room fresheners, yet we arrived at a house cleaned with Fabuloso, heavily scented laundry, and allergens I can't even identify. I was already on Prednisone for a flare but had to resort to doing treatments every two hours the first afternoon/evening/night. My eyes have been nearly swollen shut, burning, itchy, and intolerable, not to mention my overactive WBCs making copious amounts of greenish-grey phlegm. We have been vacationing with my adult child, young grandchildren, and in-laws, so leaving early really didn't seem like an option. Has anyone else had an extremely negative Airbnb experience?

  1. Sorry for the typos! My eyes were swollen and bleary and I didn't notice my mistakes! I just wanted to add in case someone else needs it later, but the fabuloso cleaner was neutralized with vinegar water, the linen I was to sleep on was washed with free and clear laundry detergent and vinegar for fabric softener.

    1. my daughter-in-law had tried, but she was in Germany. After we left, my daughter-in-law sent her another message with all the problems we had had and she left a negative review. I contacted Airbnb customer support and they flagged the home as not being allergy or asthma friendly. I felt like that was my way of advocating for other asthmatics.
      Thank you.

    2. Great move by both of you. Too many people are afraid to speak up or feel like doing so is pointless, especially with a big company. But if you don't try, you won't know -- and if you do, you can help others coming along after you. So glad you took those important steps. -Melissa, asthma.net team

  2. Hi again, stradec - I am so sorry to hear this happened to you. It is especially disturbing since your
daughter-in-law made such detailed arrangements ahead of time and before your arrival. I would think that
would have been one of the advantages of booking an Airbnb (over a hotel). I would expect that as clients, you would
have some control and influence over the proprietors as to your special needs. Sadly, this did not seem to be the case for
    your vacation.
By now, I am guessing you are already checked out and on your way to someplace more suitable for yourself (perhaps home?)
    How are you doing now?

    1. Thank you. I am slowly improving. I have been home since late afternoon Thursday, February 23rd. I have about 3 more weeks of prednisone, but honestly hoping I can stop sooner as symptoms disappear from lack of trigger response.

    2. Hi again, stradec - so glad to hear this is behind you now for almost a week. I imagine everything would subside rather quickly since all these oddball triggers are no longer present, as you said.

Perhaps you will be able to stop the prednisone sooner than the 3-week course of therapy that remains. Before stopping it abruptly or, even tapering it (depending on the dosages), you will probably want to ask the doctor for guidance. It's always best, when using steroids, to manage them under a physician's watchful eye.
      What do you think?
I do hope you continue to improve rapidly. The main thing is that you are feeling better now.
      All the best,
      Leon (site moderator asthma.net)

  3. Thank you. Yes, going down by 5 mg, so my last week is 5 mg, but it's been a rough month with an ED visit Feb 3rd for vape smoke exposure, so I have been on prednisone for quite awhile. Messed up my next research study visit, I should have gone March 10th to be randomized again, but I have to be off of prednisone for 4 weeks. Stinks, but I understand. I'm honestly hoping for Imatinib(gleevac) this time, but I of course can't choose but I'm eager for my next round. I'm attaching a site I found about this particular drug.

    1. Hi again, stradec, and thanks for the update. I also appreciate (as others do, I'm sure!), you providing a link to this medication, Imatinib. I plan to read about it from the information you were kind enough to share here.
      Warm regards,
