Asthma and dental work

Hi - has anyone ever experienced an asthma attack after dental work, root canals, crowns, and/or fillings, etc.?

  1. - this is a great question. I personally have not experienced an asthma attack during or after dental procedures. But from what I know there could be a few factors such as intrinsic and extrinsic factors. Fear-induced (extrinsic) asthma could be one issue. Many people hate going to the dentist and the fear that accompanies their visit is a huge issue. Here's an article by a colleague and Respiratory Therapist that may explain better. https://asthma.net/living/fear-induced Another reason may be allergies (intrinsic) to dental procedures. It has been well-documented that allergies induce asthma attacks. And some may have allergies to dental anesthesia or other dental material such as Latex, acrylates and formaldehyde. This can be truly worrisome and life-threatening. If you've ever experienced an attack in the dental office, do keep your dental specialist advised so they may implement strategies that may prevent an acute attack and to be prepared to manage this potential medical emergency properly. I hope some in the community respond. I'll circle back to see others' responses as this is an interesting topic. Hoping this was helpful. Warmly - Rebecca (community moderator)

    1. Hi , and thanks for your post and question - it's a good one! I see my good colleague, , has provided a thorough and comprehensive answer. I agree with all she has shared with you.
Since Rebecca spoke about intrinsic and extrinsic causes of asthma, I thought you might gain some additional insight from this article (also authored by a colleague and respiratory therapist), in which he explains the ramifications of both intrinsic and extrinsic asthma: https://asthma.net/living/extrinsic-vs-intrinsic.
I do hope you find the information is helpful for you!
      Wishing you well,
