Current Trelegy and Albuterol HFA not working as good

Current conditions: allergy season, high winds, already on trelegy and rescue inhaler albuterol HFA (PRN) and Combivent (PRN)...

So I'm an RN and got my hands on a Medrol dose pack and have been taking it to reduce inflammation in the lungs to allow a increase in airway in my lungs. So on top of the already Rx'd Trelegy and Albuterol HFA which are NOT working as well as they should, I've added the medrol dose pack and have been taking 2 tablet PRN (not the usual regimen might I add).

I'm sure someone has been through the same where their LABA (long acting beta agonist IE: trelegy) and SABA (short acting beta agonist IE: albuteral HFA/Rescue inhaler) has not been working.

Thank you for the ongoing support guys. This has been nerve racking and I don't know if I will need to be put on a steroid such as methylprednisolone (medrol dose pack) daily to keep my symptoms away. Again thanks for your time.

  1. I can totally relate. High winds, allergies with cold & wet (mold) weather here. They have really been throwing me over the edge when it comes to my asthma. Mine (Symbicort & Albuterol) are working to control the exacerbations. I have not been on steroids for uncontrolled asthma, but I am hopeful it is assisting you. Waiting to see if the community chimes in about their LABA/SABA medications to see what the consensus is currently. What has your treating provider offered you in the way of a treatment plan should the pred dosepak work/not work? Switching your LABA/SABA treatments around? Hoping you find relief soon. I am sure it being nerve-wracking isn't assisting the condition either. Best of wellness. Thinking of you. Rebecca (comm advc)

    1. Hi John
I completely understand your frustration. Over the past few years, I have traveled down the same road. I was struggling to breath esp. in the fall and was missing days of work. I am also an RN and have gotten frustrated and begun to treat myself with prednisone. Usually, it is a temporary fix. I have a couple questions for you that may help you feel better more consistently. What dose of trelegy are you taking the high or low dose? What other meds are you taking for your allergies? Have you discussed your breathing with your doctor? Have you considered a biologic? My pulmonologist maxed me out on allergy medication and inhalers and I was at the point where the choice became daily prednisone or biologic. Currently, I am taking Pepcid daily, dymista twice a day, Zyrtec daily, high dose of trelegy and Nucala. Hopefully, you will feel better soon

      1. I was on Breo Elipta & rescue, then recently supposed to go on Trelegy & rescue. My asthma is seasonal & not all the time. I am presently showing osteopenia in my spine & Osteoporosis in my arms, pelvis. Younger age I treated asthma, bronchitis with taking 4 vegetables (sulfate vegetables: broccoli, brussel sprouts, cauliflower & asparagus), plus onion & garlic daily. I did this for one year. I chose this after studying the textbook immune system of the lungs because my son & I had seasonal annual occurrences. I'M NOT SUGGESTING THIS FOR ANYONE ON THIS PAGE.
However, I did this for one year in my 30's & 40's, and that is exactly how long it took us to build a healthy immune system. It worked then, but I was younger.
Now I am returning to that and implementing nutrition that I am lacking in order to help my lungs. These medications help breathing but hurt bones which is a trade off people have to decide with their doctors. During certain seasons I have wheezing and swelling. I am nutritionally and exercise wise trying to obstruct osteoporosis & otsteopenia, and trying to avoid medication damage to bones. I'm backing off of these medications, and will seek them (rescue) only as symptoms appear & not do these Elipta's daily unless it becomes absolutely necessary. I need my bones to last as well as my lungs. I'm working on alleviating inflammation and helping my lungs receive what they need to have a healthy immune system.
It's a lot of reading, discipline to implement nutrition, & to exercise.
The exercise piece I used to walk faster for short periods to push my breathing. I again, do not suggest this to anyone. I am not severe though, and wish to try to correct what is lacking if I can, rather than using drugs that create another seriouse problem such as osteo diseases as are evident now. JM

        1. Hi interjnet (JM), and welcome. I see you are a new member here, having joined yesterday about midday. We are glad to see you already engaging with the community through this, your first post.
Thanks for sharing the way you are managing this disease both historically and now again, currently. Please do check back and let us know how it all turns out for you this time around.
We appreciate your input and your feedback.
          All the best,
