Hoarse Throat

I have tried almost everything (including all of the tips here and visits to doctors, specialists, etc)! I have not found a single steroid inhaler that doesn’t cause hoarseness in my voice. I don’t have a sore throat, but the sound of my voice is really impacted. My voice is weak and hoarse and has no ability to call at high volume. The impact of the steroid on my voice is below where I can rinse and nothing seems to stop it. Using a spacer has reduced it, but it is driving me crazy as I speak for my work.

  1. Hi , and welcome! I see you are a new member here having joined just three days ago. We are glad to see you are already engaging with the community through this, your first post.
We appreciate you present circumstances managing your asthma with medication. However, it must be quite challenging if you are unable to use inhaled corticosteroids (ICS). How do you manage?
    Wishing you well,

    1. Hi Leon,

My doctor is insisting I use it regardless of the impact on my voice, so I am taking 1 puff twice a day with a spacer and following all recommended mitigations, without success. I was managing my asthma with serevent twice a day, which was working and no impact on my voice. They have suggested that it isn’t safe to use Serevent alone. If you are aware of any other options, I would be very grateful!

      1. Hi again, Tina, and thanks for your response and further discussion. It is not clear why a physician would change a medication regimen that a patient was having success using. Perhaps you could talk further with your physician. If the doctor does not want you to use Serevent by itself, perhaps he/she could suggest the additional medication which would enable you to continue using Serevent.
If you are able to convince him to make the change back, that might be all it takes for you to get past all this. If not, you may want to seek out another opinion or, speak with your dispensing pharmacist.
I also thought you might gain some additional insight from this article, which reviews the medication Serevent: https://asthma.net/serevent-diskus-salmeterol-xinafoate. You may want to read this before you speak with your physician.
        What do you think?

    2. Yes, I lose my voice when I take a steroid inhaler.

      1. Are you still able to take a steroid inhaler? Or did your doctor have other ideas to help you control your asthma? Just curious. John. community moderator.

    3. Yes... I have been using steroid inhalers for a time and have no voice.

      1. Thank you for joining the conversation here. Thankfully this is something that I have not experienced due to my steroid inhalers. Although, by yours and other comments in this thread, it seems there are quite a few who have experienced this. I'm curious to know if you've explored any strategies or techniques to address the issue with your doctor? Perhaps they've suggested using a spacer or adjusting the inhaler technique? Wishing you all the best. John. community moderator.
