I Called EMS to Come Get Me

After two months of visiting several doctors and begging them to give me more steroids for my shortness of breath that I was convinced was asthma, I told my husband, "I still can't breathe." He answered, "what are you going to do about it?"
I decided the only way to get help was to go to the ER, but I didn't want my husband to wait in the ER for my diagnosis. I picked up the phone and dialed 911 and told them I was having a bad asthma attack. They quickly picked me up.
After a few hours of x-rays, blood work, and an EKG, the doctor told me it is NOT asthma. "It is Pulmonary edema and A-Fib." Tomorrow I have an appointment with a specialist in a nearby city to get my heart shocked for A-Fib. I only hope afterward I will no longer have shortness of breath.

  1. Hi janine - I am sorry for the delay in getting to your post - we strive to answer everyone's concern in a timely way!
Wow - you've had some ordeal here! Your experience underscores how important it is to pay attention to one's symptoms. Not all symptoms are attributable to an asthma diagnosis. When symptoms tend to persist or worsen, it is always a good idea to reach out for medical intervention. I am so glad you had the presence of mind to call 911.
How did the treatment (cardioversion), for the atrial fibrillation turn out?
Please do check back when you are able to and have the time to let us know.
    Wishing you well,
    Leon (site moderator asthma.net)
