Laughing till it hurts

My laughing fits start a chain reaction. Laughing, hyperventilating, muscle spasms, asthma attack-coughing.

  1. - I've read many accounts where laughing fits can trigger such a challenging chain reaction, leading to an asthma attack. It sounds like a difficult and distressing situation you get. Managing asthma, especially when it's linked to triggers like laughing, can be complex. How do you manage once it has begun? I hope you have a plan so that you don't struggle with loss of breath for too long. This also affects me - especially at certain times of the year, such as the holidays - visiting with family and friends and enjoying the jovial atmosphere is quite the trigger. Wishing you and yours a very happy holiday. Wishing you plenty of love, peace, and joy all around. Thoughtfully, Rebecca (community moderator)

    1. Hi , and thank you for sharing this (about yourself) with the community. You actually are not alone!!
Others in the community as well as many, many patients I've cared for over the years, have shared and/or told me how laughing can trigger an asthma attack. In fact, in my own younger years managing asthma, I had to stifle my laughing as it could trigger an episode for me as well.
We actually have a very interesting article, authored by our own , which focuses on this very topic: https://asthma.net/living/laughing-asthma-attack. I do hope you find it helpful to read.
      All the best,
