Normal Spirometry Test with Asthma

For years I have been having issues with constant throat congestion, sudden coughing outbursts, running out of breath when talking, raspiness in my throat that often renders it difficult to talk, coughing when laughing, and wheezing when talking and at times wheezing just breathing at rest. I finally saw an allergist almost a year ago who diagnosed me with asthma and I am on a steroid inhaler with albuterol as needed, as well as sinus rinses. My symptoms have worsened the past 6 months and so I had a PFT the other day and it came back normal. I haven't met with my doctor yet about next steps. I would appreciate any insights or experiences others have with this. For context, I am over 60. Thank you!

  1. Hi deesings, and thanks for your post. Based on what you've shared here, it sounds like the asthma diagnosis from about a year ago (with the allergist), has been treated with an inhaled corticosteroid (ICS), albuterol, when needed, and sinus rinses. Did this medication regimen help the condition improve for you. I understand that now, for the past six months, since your symptoms have worsened, you were given a pulmonary function test (PFT), which came back normal. It may be a good idea for you to meet with the doctor first, and find out the physician's impression of 1) the worsening symptoms you've mentioned and 2) the 'normal' PFT results.
From my perspective, the doctor should be able to determine what is happening in your situation. You may be aware we cannot provide medical advice or diagnostics over the internet (for your own safety), and so I will reserve (my) comments until we hear from your physician.
Perhaps others in the community will weigh in with their own personal experiences.
Please do let us hear back from you once you've been to the doctor. This is a puzzling situation that I would like to hear more about if you are willing to share.
    Wishing you well,

    1. I had something similar happen to myself. I had blood work done which include checking for allergies. I had PFTs done and came back normal like you. My doctor gave me a sample breo to try since other medications weren’t working. I met with my doctor to go over the results. I was told I had moderate persistent asthma. My immune system was overactive. They said asthma is reversible and we want to have normal PFTs when we were not in a flare. Now, I am on maintenance inhaler to help control the coughing, shortness of breath, and chest tightness. The inhaler is working very well. Please update us when you meet with your doctor.
