Swimming makes the biggest difference for me when it comes to dealing with my asthma. I've used swimming as my aerobic exercise for 2 extended periods in my life. (I'm 68 years old.). Each time my quality of life improved dramatically. I was able to climb stairs and hike without strong wheezing. I'm starting to swim again - hopefully for the rest of my life. It doesn't look pretty when I first start to swim. The first time I couldn't even swim one length of the pool. I used a lane next to the side of the pool so I could hold on and rest. With determination I kept at it and within a year I could swim up to mile without stopping. This took swimming at least 4 times a week. Sometimes life got in the way and I'd miss 2 or 3 weeks. But I'd jump back in as soon as possible and pick up from wherever I was - not worried that I'd be dealing with a setback. Swimming does so much to build lung capacity. I encourage anyone attracted to this form of exercise to try it out.
