Toddlers and Asthma

My son, almost three, has been in hospital twice in 6 weeks with viral induced wheeze. Second time diagnosed also with LRTI. Now he is getting out of breath when playing, restless during the night and wakes up with a cough that only stops after taking salbutamol. My question is when will be recover? Back in January a similar thing happened and it took 3 months before he seemed ok again. We’ve just started him on a brown inhaler 3 days ago. Will this improve his symptoms?

  1. Hi Bettynano, and thanks for sharing your story about your son here with the community. You may be aware we cannot provide medical advice or diagnostics over the internet (for your own safety), but your concern certainly warrants a reply.

Do you feel your son is receiving a proper diagnosis and treatment? You did mention a 'viral induced wheeze' and this general diagnosis and symptom can be indicative of any number of conditions in this age group (3 years old). You also mentioned a lower respiratory tract infection (lrti) - was this diagnosed as bacterial or viral?

You may want to discuss your very real concerns further with the private physician taking care of your son. The doctor should be able to drill down and tell you exactly what is going on (a definitive diagnosis), and what to expect from treatment and a prognosis as well.

Please do check back and let us know how this works out for you (and and your son!)

    Wishing you both the best,
    Leon (site moderator asthma.net)
