Why does Trelegy taste so bad?

My doctor switched me to Trelegy a month ago from Qvar and albuterol. Although it does seem to help with my asthma better, I cannot get over the gritty residue and nasty taste it leaves in my mouth. I’m retching and gagging every single time I have to take it. I’m tempted to ask my doc to just switch me back to Qvar. Does anyone have any tips and tricks how to mask the taste of Trelegy?

  1. Hi. Welcome to the community. You are not the first to experience an inhaler that tastes bad to you. I had a similar experience back in the 80's with a steroid inhaler called Aerobic. And I was able to talk to my doctor and he switched me to another steroid inhaler that worked just as well and tasted a whole lot better. So long as your insurance is not an issue, there are other options available that allow you to get the same three medicines that are in Trelegy. If you continue to abhor the taste of it, perhaps this would indeed be a good topic to bring up to your physician. That aside, when I do have medicines that taste bad, and I still have to take them (such as prednisone, to give one example) I follow it up with grape juice. That seems to do a good job of getting the taste out of my mouth. That said, it would be neat hearing what ideas other members of the community have. What do you think? 1. Hi , and welcome! I see you are a new member here, having joined earlier today, in the early afternoon. We are glad to see you already engaging with the community through this, your first post.
Your question is a good one! I see my good colleague, , has already responded and I concur with his ideas and suggestions.
I also have something to contribute. For medications that have bad tastes (from my own perspective), I find that applesauce solve the 'bad taste in my mouth', quite simply. It also helps that I enjoy applesauce and keep plenty of it in the house.
Perhaps the grape juice (as John suggested), or, the applesauce might work for you as well.
      What do you think?

      1. I am naughty and go right for a piece of dark chocolate if the taste is especially bad. 😀 But in general, drinking lots of water, rinsing, and then having a snack will do the trick for me. Have you tried having a glass of juice or another beverage next to you so you can take a sip right away? I feel for you -- why can't all meds be flavored as they were when I was a kid?! -Melissa, asthma.net team

        1. Exactly what I do. I go for the treat that will take the nasty taste out of my mouth quickly. Juice or water to rinse especially when gritty. It is so unpleasant to have a medication taste nasty like that and actually makes you not want to use it or switch to another because of it. Hopefully, this resolves the problem, or another med can be suggested for @CommunityMember8317544. Rebecca (community moderator)
