Why do providers not discuss the benefits of spacers more often? Why do MCOs make them so costly?

  1. When I was in the hospital, the RT made me use a spacer with my inhalers even though I prefer not to use one. I give credit to the RT for excellent patient education. Good inhaler technique also makes a big difference. The last time I got a spacer, my doctor prescribed it and my insurance covered it. It was pretty easy to obtain through the pharmacy.

    1. Respiratory therapists are the best! They are filled with so much knowledge and are always happy to share and teach. I'm glad that you feel comfortable using a spacer after learning more. All the best, Lauren (Team member)

    2. I actually rarely use my spacer. It is too clunky to carry with me and I would only need it for my rescue inhaler.

  2. In the UK I have had plenty from my doctor. Free.

    1. Where I live, they mostly prescribe spacers to children, though I know some adults who use spacers (including myself once I got proper treatment). It's hard when most people including doctors associate asthma with children and senior citizens, but not everyone else in between. Spacers have made a bit of a difference for me, though I still need my nebulizer on more intense days. I wish they were less expensive too, but I read somewhere that you could DIY one out of a plastic bottle. I could send the link if I find it.

      1. Hi there, thanks for chiming in and sharing your experience. I agree with you, that on the whole, they are often geared to children (even though we could all benefit from the function of a spacer). I'm glad that you do experience a benefit from using a spacer. All the best, Lauren (team member)
