I have severe asthma and in the past week have struggled excessively with the medical bureaucracy at two hospitals. First is where my own pulmonary doctor is and nobody wanted to contact him. There were extensive pre surgery approvals in place on how to treat my asthma. Had written conflicting instructions on what to do with my multiple inhalers bring don't bring from 1st hospital. I brought. They didn't want me to bring, yet it took me years to get to get a manageable routine. Even got anesthesia to give me an updraft prior to surgery. Post surgery my nightmare began. Hospital didn't want to use my inhaler(s). Tried to get me to agree to use different inhalers which luckily I was awake enough to know chemicals were different and I said if its the same stuff why is the strength different? Let me call my pulmonary doc and if he's ok with it I am. Suddenly everyone was not ok with this. If I was ok using my own medication we could do that, the hospital does not use what I take on a daily basis as it's too expensive. Caught them in lie #1. They tried it again with another inhaler didn't even listen to their story. Just said let me verify this is ok with my pulmonary doc and suddenly they were willing to do the extra steps necessary to get approval to use home medication from the pharmacy. My rescue inhaler and updraft treatments were the same at home or in hospital #1 so praise God no issues with them. Thursday at almost 9PM I am moved across the street to the associated Rehab hospital-its owned by same folks, they connect into same computer medical records and staff is employed by same company...related, just has a different name. Basically I have the exact same issues. Only they take it a level further and dx my orders for updraft treatments and not tell me on the weekend. Because this is an inpatient rehab hospital my pulmonary doc does not have the same standing here as he does in the main hospital across the street. How did I find out the nebulizer treatments were Dx? I was having a bad attack. The RP could only offer me my RH i declined and asked for my emergency prednisone instead, last thing someone who just had major surgery needs to be taking as it slows healing significantly. I bless the RH they have on weekends here as she listened to my lungs, gave me an updraft treatment and said she would work the orders out after the fact. While I was getting my treatment she was working her phone calling doctors and supervisors about me. I normally do 2 updraft treatments a day as part of my normal routine. Right now I have been scheduled for 3 a day. I don't understand hospitals that just make changes to your medication and assume you are going to be just fine with it. Hospital#1 stopped another home medication and considering how much pain I was in didn't realize they did it. This Rx if stopped suddenly has some serious side effects to the body. Due to some complications I spent 4 nights in hospital #1 vs 2 and it took the pharmacist at hospital #2 two days to realize it had been stopped and for her to come ask me about it. I'm very grateful she did. Thought I was reacting badly to the post surgery pain meds. How to we protect ourselves from medical bureaucracy. I have no family left, my medical advocate is not strong in this area, heck if a doctor or nurse tells her its the same medication she will believe them, I don't take what is said at face value, you have to give me more info, prove it.... I hate not believing the medical team in front of me but on some topics even as I am a newbie learning I know more than nurses who have been around for years. Scary thoughts, who do we trust?
