Always Out of Breath

I am pretty sure I had asthma from childhood. I was very active outdoors but when the President Fitness Program started in the 60's, I started failing PE as I couldn't even finish 1/2 of the 600-yard run that was required to pass. My family rarely went to a doctor, so I just suffered through.

In my teens, I moved to Santa Fe NM...cold and high, 7000-foot elevation, and had trouble breathing most of the time with any exertion. Shortly after that I went skiing for the first and only time and almost blacked out from lack of oxygen. When I saw a doctor in my 20's they said I did not have asthma because I did not wheeze...only coughed. This was before cough variant asthma was widely diagnosed. They sent me to an asthma specialist and I finally got my diagnosis.

I have also been diagnosed with COPD...but not really sure if that was because my asthma doesn't present like other "normal" asthma. I have found almost all my triggers and went from 5 medications in the 80's to only albuterol and an epi-pen. Unfortunately, in the past, I have had very little help from the medical community and have had to do most of the detective work on my own. I now have a great PCP that listens to me and doesn't overdose with me with meds that usually just makes my asthma worse.
