Basic Training

I'd never had issues as a child. I went to Orlando, FL for basic training for the Navy. During this time I got pneumonia and had a temperature of 105.6 degrees. Things went downhill from there. I've been on prescribed steroids 12-15 times per year for more than 25 years, as well as Azithromycin 250mg daily for more than 7 years. I was on Xolair injections bi-weekly when I researched the "cancer" side effects. I decided to stop. Diagnosed with abnormal bone loss and terrible oral/tooth issues. My dentist says the steroids are a factor. Getting the VA Hospital to take some responsibility is a nightmare. N A B

  1. - Having your career reel into an abyss must have been a hard thing to manage. That is an unusually long time to be on steroids. I can understand the bone loss and oral/teeth problems you've had. Since the Xolair have you tried any other treatment? How did the Xolair work for you? All medications have their drawbacks and side effects, cancer being one of the worst. I understand why you did not want to continue it. How are you managing currently? I understand the VA can be quite difficult to navigate when symptoms and conditions arise. I hope that you find the right treatment plan and begin to feel better soon. It's rough to struggle with health conditions continuously. Rebecca (team member)

    1. I have a great pulmonary Dr that's a contract DR for the VA,
as the VA has (1) Pulmonary Dr for the entire facility. But I feel I'm in a ongoing loop, Now they've added a Steroid solution for my Nebulizer.
According to my last evaluation medical board, I'm allowed to be prescribed steroids 7x per year, I've already been prescribed 11x & it's February.
Previously I was on Allergy shots, for 15 yrs, Xolair took their place, If it weren't for the fact I "Hate Needles" I might ask about trying them again.

      1. Thanks for taking the time to follow up and provide further information. I'm glad to hear that you are happy to have a great doctor. Have you been with this doctor for a while now? Have you been able to build a relationship with this doctor? I completely understand your hesitancy with needles, they can really be quite awful. We are here for you! All the best, Lauren (Team member)

      2. How strange that your current medication routine is so far beyond what was recommended for you by the board. Did you ask about this or were you given any guidance about what their plan is for your treatment as the year goes on? -Melissa, team member

    2. I ask, if it's been long enough for my "Contract Dr" she approves it
It's funny, the VA hospital sends me to her, Yet meds she prescribes (Not all are approved) the VA is "Cheapest meds for Vets" From what I've seen.
