Being a union stagehand

I've been a union stagehand for 22 years so most concerts and Broadway shows have fog machines hazers or pyrotechnics. I've had asthma since I was 14. I'm 62 now. There were times it bothered me. Dry ice fog machines don't bother me as much as the chemical-induced ones but there was one show we set up, it was a rehearsal for Sean P Diddy. There were monster stage elevator lifts all over so I was running a spotlight way above the stage, about 200 feet from the stage, thinking I was out of range of the pyrotechnics. I was not. They had so much smoke from them I started to have a problem breathing. I had my rescue inhaler with me and used it right away. It worked through the rehearsal but I had to use it one more time after the rehearsal was done. I finally caught my breath halfway on the teardown/load out of the show. So, I avoid the shows with lots of pyro and fog.

  1. Hi CM579, and thanks for sharing your experiences (as a stage hand, no less - cool!), using these types of devices in your line of work. Interestingly enough, this has been a topic for which one of our team leaders, , recently had an article published. I thought you might find it interesting to read what she had to say. For your convenience, here is a link to said article: https://asthma.net/living/special-effect-fog.
    Wishing you well,
