Diagnosis and Lung Function

1 year ago I was diagnosed with asthma. At the last appointment the Dr said I had a 6% increase in lung function after the post bronchodilator test. 1 year later on medication there is a 16% increase. Is it truly asthma if the post test doesnt have a 12% increase at the initial appointment?

  1. Hi Crader and thanks for your post. While we cannot provide medical advice or diagnostics over the internet (for your own safety), your concern certainly warrants a reply. Asthma can be diagnosed definitively as you may be aware. I thought this article might provide you with some additional insight in that regard: https://asthma.net/diagnosis/. The increase in lung function to which you refer can have various interpretations but would need more information in order to be accurate. You may want to take this up with your diagnosing physician. Please do check back and let us know how you're doing. Thanks, Leon (site moderator)

    1. Hi again, Crader. I'm checking in with your post because just today, our own John Bottrell, published an article that focuses on the diagnosis of asthma. I thought you might find it beneficial to look it over: https://asthma.net/living/reactive-airway-disease/.
      Wishing you well,

    2. Thank you so much

  2. Hi again, Crader - it's great to see you here again on asthma.net. It's been a while! I do hope you are doing okay. Glad you were able to check in and see the referenced articles we provided.

Be well - all the best!
