High IgE

Hello everyone. I had posted several weeks back, and was really struggling with my symptoms at that time. Bad news, I'm still strugging with the worst flare I've ever had. Going on 9 weeks now. Good news, I have gotten a step closer to some answers.

My pcp referred me to their pulmonary practice a few weeks ago. I saw the pulmonologist last Thursday, and she ordered blood work and a CT scan. She gave me Trelegy, which I reacted horribly to. Extreme anxiety, burning in my lungs, etc. My insurance finally decided to cover Advair, which I started today. I have used Advair in the past with mild side effects, so I'm trying to stay positive that it may help. At any rate, over the weekend I began having sharp chest pains upon breathing. This concerned me, and I ended up going to the ER, and they ended up doing a CT scan there. Blood work was fine, heart was fine, and CT scan came back clear. They sent me on my way.

The following day the blood work the pulmonologist ordered came back, and my IgE was quite elevated. I'm new to all this, but I naturally did some research. My pulmonologist called me later that day and stated she would discuss treatment with biologics with me at my next appointment. My next appointment isn't till 11/23.

This issue that I have with that, is if my flare is allergy related, I really want to know what is causing it before I commit to a treatment plan. So being the proactive person that I am, I made an appointment with an allergist for next week. Hoping to get further answers.

Has anyone on here had an elevated IgE? If so, what was the course of treatment? And what were your experiences with the treatment? Did you pursue additional allergy testing, etc?

I'm just at a loss. Nothing has helped me the past two months. I went from being a relatively healthy 42 year old who worked out 5 days a week, to feeling like I'm 90, and out of breath doing the simplest of tasks. To say this has caused me major anxiety and depression would be a total understatement.

  1. Hi again, Helene - great to 'see' you here again. I remember our conversations from earlier this month. I'm sorry to hear you are facing these challenges still but, sometimes it does take a considerable period of time to actually determine what is causing one's issues with this condition.
There are folks in our community who have personal experience with elevated IgE levels. I am hopeful they will see your post and respond individually. In addition, if you are so inclined, you may want to post your concerns on our asthma Facebook platform. We have a large numbers of community members there who may also chime in with experiences if you post there. You'll find the link at the bottom of this page.
I will wish you 'good luck!' with your upcoming appointment with the allergist. Please do check back and let us know how that all works out for you.
I see you also have a follow-up visit with the pulmonologist on 11/23, where you'll be discussing potential treatment with biologics.
We are all pulling for you, Helene!
    Warm regards,
    Leon (site moderator asthma.net)

    1. For what it's worth, Helene, allergic asthma is extremely common -- anywhere from 60 to 75 percent of people with asthma have allergic triggers, and one of the major signs of that is elevated IgE. So, it's safe to say that many people with asthma have had high IgE as you do. Our advocate John Bottrell wrote a great article that goes into more detail. Since you've done some research already it might be a bit repetitive, but I wanted to pass it on just in case!
