How do you advocate for yourself and your asthma?

It can be challenging to know what questions to ask or how to advocate for yourself at the doctor's office. What are some ways you have advocated for yourself about asthma? If you're a caretaker, how have you stepped up to advocate for the person in your care?

  1. I've only recently learned enough about my asthma to be able to advocate for myself. The hospital has always turned me away. They expect everyone to present the exact same way and have kings full of phlegm but for me I know it's severe when I get a small amount of mucus. Not much at all. I know my body however so I seek help before I get any mucus but apparently I'm not in a bad way according to them. So I told my pulmonologist and he was upset saying ER doctors are taught to not rely solely on stats. So I won't go back now. One example is they insisted I had a minor virus as my nose was a little runny. Yeah have they not hear dof allergies 🤦. But I didn't think of that on time to say.

    1. I am in Australia and we don't have urgent care but my doctor's clinic had a nurse station. I can be looked after there waiting for my doctor to prescribe meds I'd get in hospital.

    2. Thank you for the update. This helps me understand your unique situation better. It does sound like you have a great doctor who gives you the medicine you need to treat yourself at home. Based on my own experience, I can understand how nice / important it is to have a doctor like that. Wishing you all the best. John. community moderator
