Information

I was diagnosed with asthma in February, 2023. I am 68 yrs old and a 50 year smoker with no chronic history of lung issues. Needless to say, I was very surprised with the diagnosis, because I fully expected to have COPD. I have met my pulmonologist just once and it did not go well. He did not hear me or listen to my concerns. And, he never responds to the message board. Since then, I have been trying to get set up with a different pulmonologist, but the office staff never answer the phone. My GP helps a lot, and is easy to reach. What I'm trying to say is, I have learned more in the last few hours reading on this site, than I have from my medical community in 5 months. Thank you for the data base to form my questions. I am continuing to reach out for a second opinion, but now I have a question list.

  1. Hi , and welcome! I see you are a new member here, having joined just two days ago, later in the evening. We are glad to see you already engaging with the community through this, your first post.
The relationship between a patient and their physician can go a long way towards managing this disease (asthma) successfully. You are taking the absolute right action by seeking out that type of physician. While you are searching, I am sure you will be able to rely on your internist and it's good to hear he//she is so accessible.
If there is anything we can do to assist you, please let me or any other moderator / team member know. You are always welcome here!
We also appreciate your kind words. It is gratifying for our asthma.net team and community to know how helpful our community is for you. Feel free to access this site as often and, for as long as you like.
    Warm regards,
    Leon (site moderator asthma.net)

    1. - sorry to hear that your first visit with the pulmonologist did not go well at all. It can be so discouraging. As Leon states prior, "The relationship between a patient and their physician can go a long way towards managing this disease (asthma) successfully." Hoping you find another in the near future who is open to listening to your concerns and offers meaningful information to ease and treat your asthma symptoms effectively. I'm delighted to hear that you found valuable information on this site about asthma! Knowledge is a powerful tool in managing any health condition, and it's essential to stay informed and educated about your own health. Online communities and reputable medical websites can often provide a wealth of resources and experiences shared by others facing similar health challenges. But, while online resources can be helpful, they should supplement, not replace, professional medical advice. Wishing you the best in your search for the right pulmonologist and sending you thoughts of health and wellness your way. If there is some insight we can offer you, please ask. Warmly ~ Rebecca (community moderator)
