Oral Thrush

Hey all, this year my asthma is the worst it's ever been. I've been using a nebulizer with Teva-Budesonide & Salbutamol, plus Singular in pill form. I've been responding really well & even don't wake up short of breath, so exciting.
Until I got oral thrush.
I'm nearly finished my second bottle of Nystatin mouthwash and it's still not totally gone. I'm using pro-biotics, limiting my sugar (no sugar for the first 2 weeks) and still, it's lingering in the back of my throat.
Looking for any tips on how to keep using my nebulizer (other than rinsing after!)
Thanks for any help, ideas or just stories of what you've gone through! Thanks xoxo S

  1. Hi. And thank you for posting this question. It is a common one we get in this community, and I get at my work as a respiratory therapist. I say this because it is so important for you to find a way to continue taking medicine that works so well for you, and helps you to obtain good control. There are a couple of things you can try. One may be to rinse and gargle with salt water after using your inhalers. Fungus hates salty environments, so this can help to kill them and keep them at bay. This is something simple you can try on your own. Another option, if you don't want to use salt, is to use baking soda instead of water. Along with that, if you do not do this already, you may benefit from using a spacer. It helps break up the large particles so that they do not impact your upper airway. So, a spacer is a great way to reduce your risk of developing thrush. I also talk about this topic in more detail in this post (https://asthma.net/living/lets-talk-oral-thrush). Another option is to talk to your physician. If Nystatin isn't working, there are other medicinal options for treating thrush. What do you think? John. asthma.net community moderator.

    1. Thank you for taking the time to reply to my post. I really appreciate your suggestion about the salt water rinse, I will start doing that for sure! I look forward to reading your article. Thanks again for your kind works and great advice, ShandiJJ
