Special Effects Smoke = Instant Cough

I have been triggered so many times by special effects smoke (even the kind that is supposedly "allergen-free"😉 that I watch carefully for places that might have it: spooky houses at Halloween, theatre shows, and concerts!
Pre-treating helps but does not always prevent those attacks. So I am very careful because I really hate the cough-til-you-barf effect.

  1. Hi Zoann, and thanks for your post and comment. You may be interested to know this has been a very popular topic of late. Coincidentally, one of our team leaders (), has just had an article published which reviews this very subject. I thought, in view of your own comment and expressed concern, that you might find it interesting to look over Andrea's material. For your convenience, here is a link to her article: https://asthma.net/living/special-effect-fog. I do hope you find it is interesting to read.
We appreciate you sharing your own experiences dealing with this 'smoke'.
    Wishing you well,
    Leon (site moderator asthma.net)

    1. Thanks, Leon! It was Andrea's article that prompted me to write my story. I'm glad to see the word is getting out about those fog machines. I realize that they provide exciting effects, but sending people to the ER because they can't breath is NOT an exciting effect!

      1. Thank YOU, Zoann! We appreciate you chiming in based on the article authored and published here by . We are glad that you were encouraged to share your own story after reading about Andrea's.
        Warm regards,
        Leon (site moderator asthma.net)

    2. It's one of those "fun" little parts of having asthma. I always say that my lungs are Drama Queens - if they can overreact, they will!

It's annoying that people without asthma don't have to think twice about fun events with special effects smoke. But no......we start to worry because we know what can happen.
And I have done the coughing until you throw up bit many times - as have all 3 of my kids. They all inherited asthma from me. So we are a houseful of genetically defective people!

In fact, many of my nieces and nephews also have asthma. And one of them ended up in the ER after seeing a show in Vegas

Stay well and thanks for commiserating
