Strange symptoms during an asthma flare

I was just wondering if anyone has experienced brain fog during an asthma flare? I often feel unable to communicate what I want to say and I find I get confused easily.

I also find that I get freezing cold during an asthma flare and end up shivering a lot of the time and unable to keep myself warm.

Has anyone else experienced either of these things?

  1. yes, yes! I have experience brain fog quite often. Almost every flare-up has almost the same "stages" for me.
First one is brain fog and it is very hard to concentrate. I like to picture that phase as "brain shrinking phase" because I just feel like I don't have nearly half the normal brain ability to think and grasp concept. This phase lasts one to three days. And it is also really hard for me to articulate what I have i mind. I feel very tired, but mostly mental tiredness. Often I have to go home in the middle of my working day and just sleep por a couple of hours to feel a little beter.

The next phase is coughing and classic symptoms of not enough air and much tiredness, both physical and mental. Coughing is mostly dry and exhousting.

Finally the last phase is the last day where Im coughig extreemly much, but it is a wet cough and feels a little bit better with every cough mucus out. I like to paint a picture of this phase like Im drowning in my lungs. I feel like if Im not coughing enogh I really might drown. But after that I feel much much better.

About cold, I'm quite much cold all the time, so I cant relate to that, But I can say that that phase One is the worst for me. I rarely can describe to my colleagues that I'm not ok, mostly because Im too tired, but Im looking ok I guess, with no coughing and stuff, Im just really confused like you said.
The Irony in all of this is that every one in the office thinks that Im really bad on the phase three, when Im actualy starting to get better.

Thank you for this post, I have been documenting this phenomenon just to track it down is it common to me, and find myself google it noumerus tines to try and find it that it can be a symptom.

I'm really looking forward to other's experiences.

    1. Thank you for your response. It’s good to know I’m not alone. Last time I had a flare up, I really struggled to tell my colleagues what was going on because my brain wasn’t working!

      1. Hi again, Han-El, and thanks for bringing up this concern. I see our fellow community member, , has already shared her own personal experiences on the issues you mentioned (brain fog, feeling chilled) for all of us to read. (Thanks, Antonia!).
I also have something to contribute. As it turns out, others in the community have spoken about asthma and brain fog. You can find their thoughts expressed in posts right here on asthma.net. For your convenience, here are links to those conversations.
