Using Steroidal Inhalers

I’ve been having trouble with my mouth a couple of weeks ago. The mouth dryness went away, but now I have this burning in my throat. I rinse every time I use steroidal inhalers. I take budesonide by machine, brio inhaler, Incruse inhaler, and budesonide nasal drops. Has anybody had this before? My doctor has prescribed nystatin but I really don't want to swallow this stuff. Is there anything else I can do and does anybody else have trouble with their throats because of these products?

  1. Hi traveler309, and thanks for your post/question. One of the potential side effects of using inhaled corticosteroids (ICS), can be 'thrush' in the oral cavity/mouth. As you've mentioned, it is usually avoided by actively rinsing and gargling following the administration of the medication. That procedure is supposed to cleanse the area which was exposed to the medication. This may work for many people while it does not work for others. If you are not receptive to using the Nystatin, you may want to discuss your concerns further with your physician.

As well, I'm hopeful others in the community will chime in with their own personal experiences.

We do have a wealth of material on this very topic published right here on our COPD.net website. For your convenience, here is a link to many of them: https://asthma.net/?s=Candida.I do hope you find this material to be helfpul.

    1. Hi, I used Breo for a while and I now use Dulera. I have had dry mouth sometimes from them. But both of them make my me feel like I'm losing my voice sometimes. The Dulera has helped my breathing so I just accept that side effect.

      1. Hi MaryAnn - and thanks for chiming in here. While I can understand that Dulera is making you feel more comfortable with your breathing, you may still want to mention the side effects you described (dry mouth and loss of voice/hoarseness) to your prescribing physician. There still may be an alternated medication that can be suggested that will be just as efficacious.

        What do you think?

        Wishing you well,

    2. I was just going to echo what Leon said. I'm fighting with thrush myself right now. Nystatin is a great oral rinse (I like the banana flavor) but I also take probiotic from trader joes the high microbial count. And I rinse with probiotic yogurt and by rinse I mean I swish with it and then drink it to help keep the candida down. Make sure the yogurt doesn't have a ton of sugar in it. Which is to say, that it's not in the first 4 or 5 ingredients on the ingredients list. This is what works for me, in addition to the nystatin. Hope this helps, your food will taste better when you get rid of the thrush. You know you have it if you have a white-yellowish coating on your tongue and for me, my tongue feels like someone replaced it with a cat tongue.
