Should I use my ventolin before symbicort as part of my management plan?

  1. Thanks for writing lily. First, let me say that any treatment regimen should be developed in conjunction with your doctor. My research indicates that there is no particular reason Symbicort and ventolin can not be used together. If you find that you regularly need to use the rescue inhaler, it may be an indicator that your asthma is not in good control and your treatment plan may need to be adjusted. Hopefully some others can chime in with their experiences with these medications. Wishing you the best. Richard (Asthma.net Team)

    1. Hi lily and thanks for your inquiry. I see that Richard has provided solid suggestions in terms of developing your treatment regimen in concert with your physician.

Some practitioners suggest using a rescue inhaler prior to using the maintenance inhaler. The time frame suggested can be 15-30 minutes beforehand. The rationale is the rescue inhaler will open the airways and permit the maintenance inhaler to have a deeper deposition. Other practitioners don't think this is necessary.

You may want to ask for your physician's take on this.
      All the best,
