Allergy immunotherapy theophylline shots

Did anyone get a few allergy shots and get asthma. Other thing is how do you know if asthma is stable to start allergy shot? Also did the allergy immunotherapy help your allergies and asthma?

  1. Hi. Thank you for your questions. They are good ones. I actually wrote a post about my own experience with allergy shots. I will post a link below if you would like to check it out (https://asthma.net/living/my-experience-with-allergy-shots). To answer your first question: In my experience, I have never had an allergy shot cause asthma. Although, as a safety measure, my doctor has me stay in his office for about 20 minutes after injections and to carry an epi pen with me. Thankfully I never had an issue and other than itchy arm -- which I am told is normal. Your second question. Allergy shots are one strategy for helping asthmatics with allergies gain better control of their asthma. Determining if your asthma is stable enough for allergy shots is a conversation best had with your asthma doctor. Your doctor can assess your current asthma control, symptoms, and overall health to make an informed decision. Your third question: Did allergy immunotherapy help with my allergies and asthma? I am currently trying to decide if this is the case. I do think they are helping as I have had very good control over my allergies and asthma for over a year now (knock on wood). I hope this response helps you. What about you? Are you and your doctor considering allergy shots? Wishing you all the best. John. community moderator.

    1. I had 4 allergy shots and my chest hurt and felt sick everyday and had diarrhea everyday to where I would empty out all at once. I usually have constipation. The allergy clinic thought it was asthma so stopped the shots. I saw the pulmonologists today and results from my PFT and methacoline challenge test were negative. So the doctor says no asthma. Since I had those 4 allergy shots have more runny nose than before. I have gerd and last February I found out I have a hiatal hernia. They think from my symptoms that the hernia moved up. It caused some wheezing, upper chest discomfort a few times, also pain by sternum and all across the diaphragm muscle spasm and somtimes affected breathing and the nausea. They pulmonologists wants me to wait with allergy shots till the stomach issues are taken care of.

      1. What a tough situation! It's amazing how certain health conditions can mimic one another. I'm so glad that you and your care team did the needed testing to rule out asthma and focus your efforts on your hernia. I hope that ends up being the solution for you.
