Just shortness of breath

Diagnosed with asthma when I was 23.After several years with asthma I started getting allergy shots, took them for 12 years.I started taking singular and using Ventolin and pro air and eventually got better for the most part. When I had asthma attacks I would cough, wheeze and pretty much gasp for air.Now I am 67 years old and a few months ago just had shortness of breath,no weezing,no cough.Doctor is saying its asthma and put me on a annuity steroid inhaler.I have gained 6 lbs in a month which I say us from the inhaler, not doing anything different.I had covid in September, wondering if that may have anything to do with it and if anyone has experienced the same symptoms? Thanks for your time

  1. Hi , and welcome! I see you are a new member here, having joined yesterday, in the early evening. We are glad to see you already engaging with the community through this, your first post.
Thanks for sharing your medical history here with the community. While I am hopeful others in the community will see your inquiry and respond by sharing their own personal anecdotal experiences, I have something to contribute as well.
From my own professional experience taking care of patients over the many years, there are a good number of patients who are able to gain control over this disease by utilizing a successful medication regimen, prescribed by their physician. This sounds to be what you have done over the years.
For some folks, asthma can change over the years. We actually have an article which speaks to this topic, which I thought might be of interest: https://asthma.net/answers/change-over-time.
Perhaps this explains your recent situation (shortness of breath (SOB), without wheezing).
As for the weight gain, I do remember reading several comments here within the asthma.net community, where other members have expressed their concern over gaining weight and the use of steroids (systemic and metered dose inhalers (MDI's).
Besides the anticipated responses from the community, I thought you also might want to discuss this with your own private medical doctor (PMD). Perhaps the physician will be able to guide you.
    What do you think?
