Eucalyptus

In 2009 I visited La Gomera, a Spanish Canary Island. I was in a beautiful hotel with a huge buffet and my room had a view of the ocean and spectacular sunsets. The day after Benazir Bhutto was assassinated, a family of grind whales came very close to the beach at breakfast time. Breakfast was always served on the roof of the hotel with the beach and ocean waves at throwing distance. I took it as a special sign that a momma, papa, and baby whale honored her death and were playing in the waves on a beautiful, sunny day. The only problem I had was that the hotel staff used eucalyptus in the water to disinfect and clean. I wheezed and felt like I was going to suffocate and maybe have to switch hotels. When I told them of my allergy and asthma, and asked that they please don't use eucalyptus to clean my floors and sheets, they accommodated me and stopped using it. My dream vacation was rescued!

  1. I LOVE this for you. How many times do we hear stories of vacations or other events that were ruined because of some chemical or trigger? What a great reminder to everyone here that there are good people, and good places, out there that are willing to accommodate us. And now you have all those great memories. I'm sure you have outrageous pictures, too! Thanks so much for sharing. -Melissa, team member
