Is there anything you wish someone had taught you about your breathing beyond recognising symptoms, avoiding triggers and using medication?

I’ve had asthma for as long as I can remember. Growing up meant inhalers, endless doctor appointments, lung function tests and limitations around sports.
Then I became a dive instructor, which is kind of ironic, and I’ve now been diving for 10 years. Being underwater completely changed my curiosity around breathing. I started exploring how different breathing can feel and became fascinated by breath in a way I’d never experienced through asthma.
If you’ve lived with asthma for a long time, is there anything you wish someone had taught you about your breathing beyond recognising symptoms, avoiding triggers and using medication?
I’d genuinely love to hear other people’s experiences.

  1. I would love to hear what our community thinks as well. But really just wanted to pop in and say thank you for sharing. I really loved how you described this - especially how becoming a dive instructor really changed the way you thought about your breathing! It is such an interesting perspective after growing up with asthma and having breathing framed so much around symptoms, limitations, and medication. So thank you! -Kimberli (Team Member)
