Slow recovery after severe flare

How long does it take to recover from a severe asthma episode?

3 weeks ago I had my first ever severe flare where attacks were being triggered several times a day. In the months running up to that is been struggling with chest pain and fatigued, in hindsight this was asthma bubbling under the surface.

I'm now on a preventor inhaler and has a short course of steroids which finished a couple of weeks ago.

Since then, I still get breathless (not an attack) when taking and walking. Initially this was very bad, now it's only at the end of a long day of constant talking. I still have some residual chest pain.

My doctor said this shouldn't be the case, but chatgpt says this is normal and might take a while to settle down. What's your experience?

I am waiting for my referral to the asthma clinic, but that's likely to take months. I also have the option of montelukast, but just waiting for the right timing to trial that as I've just got a big promotion at work. (The GP was OK with that).

  1. It took me a good 2 to 3 weeks to fully recover from a strong asthma episode. It happened in May. I had a lingering cough for a couple of weeks after the flare started. I would just feel fatigued and while I wasn't breathing bad the whole three weeks it seemed like it didn't take much to trigger some coughing or wheezing. Getting a flare can be pesky as it can take some time to recover.

    1. As always, thanks for sharing your experience. We are glad that you are recovered. -Lauren (team member)

  2. Checking in to see how you are making out. I hope that you are starting to feel some relief. Were you able to schedule an appointment with the asthma clinic? Wishing you the best, Lauren (team member)

    1. Thanks for checking in! I'm doing OK but I've managed to pick up covid now so I'm breathless with that 🙈. Despite that I managed to blow my pre-attack peak flow for the first time in weeks so hopefully I'll be OK once I get over this.

I've been told my referral to the asthma clinic is likely to be around Christmas due to long waiting times at the moment.
