How long can a flare up last after smoke exposure?
I’m new to this asthma diagnosis and it’s still not well controlled. I was at a friends house last night with a campfire burning. Almost 24 hours later, my chest hurts, I’m still coughing, and I just don’t feel well. How long should I expect this to last?
Hi rejennerate and thanks for your post. Triggers affect all people differently. What is a trigger for one patient might not affect another patient at all! As well, recovery times from flare ups vary from patient to patient too. Some seem to be able to bounce back naturally while others require medication. Since the symptoms you describe (chest hurting, coughing and not feeling well) have affected you for more than 24-hours, you may want to reach out to your physician for an evaluation. I second Leon's advice- contact your physician. You might need a higher dose of your preventer inhaler to help symptoms and shorten their duration.
Also, avoid other triggers in the meantime.
It might take some time to recover, it's hard to predict. For hours
You seem to have had this experience as well. It can take quite a while to recuperate from being around a campfire for those with breathing conditions such as asthma. Have you managed to control symptoms once triggered? Can you give a little more detail? Regards, Rebecca (team member)
It depends on how long the smoke is in the air.
Campfires not long. Wildfires that last week's at a time. Much longer and requires multiple medications.Good point that you make. Are you able to avoid this asthma trigger for the most part? John. community moderator.
