Does anyone else get a sore achy sometimes painful chest?

A couple of years ago, I had a very bad asthma exacerbation and suffered from bad chest pain. Since then, every time I catch anything from a light cold to a severe chest infection, I end up with some form of chest discomfort. In early December last year, when I suffered a chest infection and asthma exacerbation, I had such severe chest pain that I ended up calling 999 as the pain reached a level unlike anything I had ever felt before. I currently have a mild cold, and my whole chest aches and taking a deep breath is painful. Every time I bring it up to the doctors, they dismiss the pain as muscular but never offer any solution other than paracetamol. Does anyone else have anything similar? And do you put it down to asthma or just being sick with something else?

  1. Hi. That's a hard situation to be in, especially when you feel like your doctors aren't listening.

We're not doctors here, and we can't give medical advice for your own safety. Chest pain is really tricky because there are so many different possibilities, from the muscles to the lungs, the heart or even the GI system. Here's an article that talks about some of them.

It may be that your body has become more sensitive since that attack several years ago. Does anything at all seem to help with the pain? You are the expert in your own body, and if you feel like your doctors aren't hearing you, I would encourage you to push back a little with them. You have the right to be taken seriously and if what they are suggesting isn't working, it's time to try something else. I'm not sure where you're located but is it possible to ask to see a different doctor or get a second opinion or consult from someone else?
