Thrush using steroid inhaler

I took Symbicort for years using a spacer and never had an issue. Insurance dropped Symbicort and my asthma doctor put me on Fluticasone propionate and Salmeterol HFA Inhalation Aerosol with spacer. I have had thrush twice in the first year. I always rinse my mouth thoroughly with diluted lysterine after each use. Nystatin got rid of it but it has come back.

  1. I am going through a fungal infection for the first time after being on Zenhale with an aerochamer. I faithfully rinsed and gargled each time. It is the most painful experience and I can't eat anything except yogurt and kefir and some applesauce. I am on nystatin as well. I am thinking of a newer drug that you use an nebulizer with. I will call my lung doctor soon.

    1. Good morning. That sounds like a great idea. Please let us know what your doctor says. Wishing you all the best. John. community moderator.

    2. As John mentions, it sounds like contacting your physician is just the right thing to do. Many times when unbearable side effects come up with treatment it has to be continued or discontinued with nothing put in their place. There are so many different treatments and combinations of treatments that can help. This is a reminder - don't be afraid to call or send a portal message advocating for something more effective with fewer side effects. Wishing you the best as you tackle this issue. 2. Good morning, and thank you for your post. Sorry to hear you’re experiencing thrush after switching inhalers, despite using a spacer and rinsing your mouth. The two inhalers you're now taking provide the same types of medicine as Symbicort. Since steroid inhalers increase the risk of thrush—and both Symbicort and fluticasone contain steroids and use the same metered-dose inhaler—it’s unclear why this change is causing an issue now.Did your doctor offer any insights?John, Community Moderator
